About BALID
Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) is a national association of librarians, information scientists and teachers of information science and library management. It is the only full-fledged professional body in Bangladesh in the field of library and information management. The mission of BALID is to modernize the library and information profession and to uphold the interest of the professionals in Bangladesh. BALID believes that access to information; intellectual freedom and knowledge based society are the key components of development.
History:
BALID was founded on 23 January 1986 in a meeting of a group of young library professionals at the ground of Modern Language Institute of University of Dhaka in order to bring dynamism in library profession and to meet the demand of the library professionals of the country. This meeting was presided over by Mr. K. M. Abdul Awwal and formed a convening committee with Professor S. M. Mannan as Convener. The first meeting of the convening committee was held on 30 January 1986 where the convener Professor S. M. Mannan proposed the name of the new association “Bangladesh Association of Young Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalist (BAYLID)”. The name Bangladesh Association of Young Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalist (BAYLID) was renamed as Bangladesh Association of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists (BALID) in the EC meeting held on 7 September 1986 to make it open to all ages of library professionals.

Aims and Objectives:

Modernize the services of library, information and documentation centres to all sections of the country;

Improve the status of Librarians, Information Scientists and Documentalists working in the country and enhance the improve quality at work place;

Advancement of professional skill and profession;

Uphold professional interest and welfare of the members

Co-operate with different libraries, information and documentation centres and build relations with similar institutions/organizations in relevant issues;

Establish an integrated national information system;

Alleviate illiteracy and contribute to improve the quality of education.
Organizational Set Up:
