"Cadre Service for Library and Information Science is essential to gear up library movement in the country" it comes out from the 27th death anniversary of M S Khan, the father of library and information science education and librarianship of the country, which was observed on 13 August, 2005. A seminar on "Library Movement in Bangladesh: past, present and future" organized by LAB-M S Khan Foundation was held on the day at Seminar Hall, Central Public Library, Shahbagh, Dhaka. Barrister M Aminul Haque MP, Minister for Posts and Telecommunications and Dr. M Asaduzzaman, Chairman, University Grants Commission of Bangladesh were attended the seminar as the chief guest and special guest respectively. Principal Mohammad Sharif Hossain was present the Keynote paper on the seminar. Prof. M. Harurur Rashid, Former DG of Bangla Academy and Professor, Department of English, North South University, Dr. M. Mostafizur Rahman, Chairman, BALID and General Secretary, LAB-MS Khan Foundation, Abu Saleh, Director, Department of Public Library, Kh. Fazlur Rahman, Librarian, Dhaka University, and Abu Bakr Siddiq were the discussants on the paper. Syed Ali Akbor, General Secretary, Library Association of Bangladesh (LAB), Abdun Nur, Sultan Uddin Ahmed also spoke on the seminar. Dr. Abdus Sattar, President, LAB- MS Khan Foundation was presided over the seminar.
Chief guest Barrister M. Aminul Haque told that enlighten and rich people of the society should take a vital role to spread library movement through out the country. He urged to create a Cadre Service for the library profession and traced on bringing non-government public libraries under the same umbrella of the government public library systems in the country.
Special Guest Dr. M. Asaduzzaman said that an educational institution can not survive without library. A quality higher education fully depends on a rich library. He urged to bring all university libraries in the country under computer network as soon as possible to quality higher study and research.
Principal Sharif Hossain underlined the point on his paper:-the union council and school building may use as a public library in the evening, government may lease her land for establishing libraries, government and selected non-government libraries should set up book bank etc.
The discussants acknowledged MS Khan as a pioneer of library movement and father of library education and librarianship in the country. Mr. Khan was the founder head of the department of Information Science and Library Management of Dhaka University, and founder president of the Library Association of Bangladesh and founder editor of the journal Eastern Librarian.
M. Mostafizur Rahman
